TIPS from The Good Dog Spot: Pet Safety for Halloween…and Every Day!

Pet safety is at the heart of everything we do, every day, at The Good Dog Spot. This time of year – “spooky season” – may be fun for humans, but Halloween can be downright petrifying for your pets. We want to share a few practical tips to keep your dogs and cats safe, calm, and content this Halloween.

Halloween Safety Tips:

  • Keep candy out of reach. Especially chocolate and artificial sweeteners like xylitol which even small amounts can be toxic.

  • Watch the door. With so many trick-or-treaters coming and going, it is easy for a curious pup or cat to slip outside. Before the night begins, double check that collars and tags are on, just in case anyone slips out unnoticed.

  • Consider creating a safe, quiet space away from the front door because the non-stop ringing and strange costumes also can cause stress and anxiety.

  • Be mindful of decorations. Pumpkins with open flames or electric cords, glow sticks, and dangling props can be hazardous if inquisitive noses get too close.

  • Costumes aren’t for everyone. Remember, not all pets enjoy costumes. Consider their comfort before dressing them up. If you do go for it, make sure the outfit is comfortable, doesn’t restrict movement, sight, or breathing, and has no loose parts that could be chewed off.

Safety is more than a holiday checklist for us. It is a mindset that shapes everything we do at The Good Dog Spot. In addition to these safety tips, we’re also proud of two additional ways we prioritize safety.

Fear Free Certified: The Gold Standard

The Good Dog Spot doesn’t just meet industry standards; the team sets them. Being “Fear Free Certified” means staff are trained to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress in pets. Techniques range from gentle handling and positive reinforcement to creating an environment where dogs and cats feel safe and happy, whether they’re here for daycare, grooming, or overnight boarding. Your pet receives care designed to promote health and emotional well-being with every tail wag.

First Aid Classes: Empowering Pet Owners

Keeping pets safe isn’t just for the professionals. Throughout the year, we are proud to host First Aid Classes for the public. Classes are led by certified staff and cover crucial topics like CPR, wound care, and emergency response. Learning these lifesaving skills gives you the confidence to act quickly and ensures you’re prepared if your pet ever needs help.

We just recently completed a course led by our Spot On Academy Instructor, Jennifer Rueli, a certified Pet Tech First Aid & CPR Instructor, and there will be more coming up. If you’re interested, be sure to ask about upcoming sessions and reserve a spot in our hands-on training.  Trust us, your pet will thank you for it.
